Pharmacology and Biophysics

Overview:

The department of Pharmacology was established in 1982. In 1994, it was merged with the Biochemistry Dept. and continued so until 2004.

Now the Department of Pharmacology consists of 5 lecturers, in which 3 of them have PhD degree and the rest have MSc degree.

In 1994, the Department of Biophysics was established with the Assistant Professor Dr. Sartib Fatah Kakai as the head of the department since 11/10/1994.  This went on until the year 2001 were the Department of Biochysics merged with the Department of Physiology. The department  of Biophysics consists of 6 lecturers, 3 with PhD degree and the rest have MSc degree.

Mission of pharmacology:

By the end of the course of pharmacology, the students should know:

  • The rational and effective choice of the drug in the clinic through understanding of the physiology,                      biochemistry, pathophysiology of a particular disease.
  • Drug mechanisms of action and therapeutic end-points as well as potential side-effects and drug-drug interactions which a physician will likely to encounter.
  • Students should be able to understand that the use of drugs to cure & not produce adverse- effects.
  • Knowledge of probability and severity of adverse reaction.
  • To keep the students well informed with the developments of newer drugs and therapy.

Mission of Medical Physics:

It will develop their skills as successful future Doctors , They learn Physics basic which is the fundamental of all other science inducing medicine , philological measurements and how to use the instruments as medicine , They will acquire knowledge, laboratory  and  practical they will carry out the experiments practically  , Conduct library research and demonstrate computer literacy , Communicate effectively through discussions to develop their skills.

Objectives of Pharmacology:

The Department of Pharmacology has responsibility for teaching the science of pharmacology for third year undergraduate students in the medical, dentistry & pharmacy college. The goal of the course in Pharmacology is to prepare students for the upcoming years during which they must be able to understand:

  • Which drugs may be useful for a particular diseased condition.
  • How to design rational and effective pharmacotherapy for the treatment of a particular patient.

These emphases are achieved by teaching the students:

  • The influence of drugs on the body biochemical processes that cause the patho-physiological changes so  that the student will be able to suggest the use of drugs to modify such patho-physiological condition.
  • Drug receptor-interaction as the pharmacological basis of therapeutics in understanding the drug action.
  • Principles of receptor specificity to choose optimal therapeutic agent.
  • Receptor mediated effects to predict side effects.
  • Principles of pharmacokinetics to establish dose regimens and to optimize it in presence of altered physiological states like pregnancy, age and disturbed functions of major organ systems.

Objectives of Biophysics:

The goal of this course in Medical Physics is to prepare students for the upcoming professional medical years during which they must be able to understand which Physical means such as Physiotherapy , radiation and medical instruments   may be useful for a particular clinical situation? This involves an understanding of the:

The application of Physics such as:

  • Mechanism, heat, light, Sound, electricity & Magnetism to Medicine . Of various organ systems such as the eyes, ears ,     lungs , and the heart & circulatory  system.
  • The most important application of physics in medicine involves:
1. The field of radiology
2. Physics principles of instruments used in medical diagnosis & therapy
3. Nuclear Medicine used in medical diagnosis & therapy
4. Radiation protection in medicine
  • In course of Medical Physics learning, students must understand not just THAT a medicine works for a particular ailment, but WHY and HOW it will work and, when comparing different modes of treatment, WHICH one will be the most efficacious.
  • Keep the students well informed with developments of newer Physiological instruments  Devices of Radiation that provide better remedy of diseases with least adverse-effects.
  • The knowledge gained in Medical Physics should bind together the integration of clinical skills, the understanding of disease and the effective use of Physical means.
  • The department of Medical Physics  is also enrolled in teaching postgraduate students , this teaching includes  medical imaging with X-rays, CAT scans, PET imaging, MRI, Physiotherapy etc. and a study of the biological effects of radiation
