Department of Microbiology

Overview:

This department was formed in 1979, three years after the establishment of the College of Medicine.  In the beginning, it was known as the "Department of Pathology and Microbiology" to combine both sciences in one department as a result of the small faculty members.  The department was consisting of the department head in addition to six teaching faculty (two had an Iraqi nationality and taught microbiology, and four from India who taught microbiology and pathology).

In 1987, the department was formed of three Iraqi lecturers with a PhD degree, as well as seven Iraqi lecturers with a MSc. Degree.

During the academic year 1996-1997, the Department of Microbiology became separated from the Pathology one.

Now the department consists of 20  lecturers, 13 with PhD degree, 5 with MSc degree, 2 MSc students nd 3 PhD students.

Mission:

The department of medical microbiology has the responsibility for teaching the third year students the science of bacteriology, virology, mycology, parasitology and immunology the subject that deals with general properties, source of transmission, pathogenesis, disease and laboratory methods and techniques used to identify these organisms. the course include the structure of human immune system as well as the correlation between the immune system and some of human diseases and disorders.

Objectives:

At the end of the course, the students will able be to understand the macroscopic and microscopic structure, the morphological, physiological, and biochemical characteristics of pathogens (virulence factors) and how these organisms are transmitted, the diseases caused by these organisms and how they can be treated and prevented. The students will learn what laboratory techniques and methods are used to identify these organisms, also they will learn the components of human immune system as will as its role in some diseases and disorders.
